Three Gorges Migration Memorial Museum (Wanzhou)
1.31 million people left home so the reservoir could fill. The museum keeps the boat ticket of the first man to go, and the belongings of a resettlement officer who died on the job.
The only museum in China built specifically to record the Three Gorges resettlement. When the dam was built, 1.31 million people in the reservoir area left home for somewhere else; in Chongqing alone the final figure was 1.138 million, made up of 489,000 rural and 649,000 town residents.
This is in Wanzhou, several hours upriver from central Chongqing, and it is a different institution from the Three Gorges Museum in Chongqing city — the latter is a general history museum, this one is about the resettlement itself.
