Beidaihe coastal wetlands (bird migration)

These wetlands are a monitoring point on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. One 2022 survey season recorded 34 bird species across three sites, including one under China's highest level of state protection and three under the second.

Beidaihe sits on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, and its coastal wetlands are surveyed as a monitoring site for it. A 2022 joint survey by the Beidaihe wetland authority and the Qinhuangdao ecological monitoring centre covered three areas — Shihe South Island at Shanhaiguan, Gezi Wo at Beidaihe, and Qilihai in the Beidaihe New Area.

Beidaihe is known in China as a beach resort, but the wetlands are a separate thing and they run on the birds' calendar, not the swimming season — the survey work is organised around migration, so the reason to come and the reason most Chinese visitors come are not the same.
